The choir was originally formed by a churchwarden of Cradley Church, Carol Holt, in 1978. We currently have about forty singers in four parts SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bass).
The committee comprises its Chairman, Brigadier Bill Backhouse, the present Musical Director David Kemp who took over from Dr. Stefan Scot in 2005, Secretary Judith Soper, Treasurer Marion Couston, Concerts Manager Madeline Brewin, publicity secretary Jean Clift plus representatives from all parts of the choir. The choir is considered one of the finest and most adaptable choral societies in the County and has a mixed and varied repertoire. Because of its size it is also able to explore less well-known music.
Performances in recent years have included a concert as part of the Elgar Birthday Celebrations at Malvern Priory and a performance of Mozart's Coronation Mass to celebrate his anniversary in 2006. Other performances include performances of the Montiverdi Vespers, Bach Magnificat and Vivaldi Gloria. This is in addition to jazz performances and arrangements of popular music, which gives an indication of the flexibility of the group.
The Spring Term started on Wednesday 9th January 2008, when rehearsals resumed at Cradley School. The choir is working towards a concert in Worcester Cathedral on 12th April in aid of The Worcester Cathedral Appeal for Music and Light. The programme is a joint concert with Bromyard Wind Band and will include music by Vaughan Williams, Holst, Elgar, Arnold, Howells, Finzi, Parry and Ireland. 2008 sees the 50th Anniversary of the death of Vaughan Williams.
New singers are always warmly welcomed and should be experienced singers and competent sight-readers. Come along to a rehearsal or phone 01885 482157 to discuss joining us with our musical director, David Kemp.
